Marvin Goldstein, the famous LDS musician and a fascinating Jewish convert to the LDS faith, is performing in Provo on June 6. It’s a celebration of Goldstein’s 50 years of performing to be held as a gala concert at the Covey Center for the Arts. I hear it’s sold out. If you are one of the lucky ones able to attend, you’re in for a real treat. The warm-up act (about 20 minutes or so, I think) will be one of my favorite pianists and a good friend, David Sylvester of Missouri. I think both will have CDs available.
Any of you going? Please tell us about it afterward.
I’m also interested in hearing your favorite Marvin Goldstein experiences or recollections.
Marvin was here about a month or so ago for a fireside. I'd heard him before then, and he's really good. Plus, David Sylvester is our Stake President's son, and he's also a great pianist. He's been at it since he was a kid. I remember hearing him play a piece by Rachmaninoff at a stake youth talent show when he was 12. You will not be disappointed.
I am seeking information regarding an LDS operatic tenor (at least I think he's LDS). When I used to have BYU television about 5 years ago or so, he was on several programs performing at high profile LDS events, like Christmas and such. Does anyone have any idea who this singer might be? He really had a beautiful voice (I think he sang "Danny Boy" during one concert–and it was the best I have heard it sung.) Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.
Peace and Grace!
Years ago, Bro. Goldstein performed at a fireside at the Institute at Southern Utah Univerdsity. Part of his performance was to have audience members give him three disparate songs, which he would arrange into a single medley on the fly (asssuming he knew the song, naturally).
The second time through, he had already gotten a request for "A Whole New World" from Aladdin, and then he called on me.
"Yellow Submarine!" I shouted out.
He tried. Really he did. But there was just no way.
David Sylvester's website is SylvesterMusic.com. Just launched–more coming soon.
I remember seeing Marvin Goldstein at BYU Education Week a long time ago.
What impressed me was that he was offered the keyboard position with Three Dog Night, but turned it down because he didn't want to be taken away from his family. That left an impression on me.
Good day brother. We are going to sing in our stake conference. We found your arrangement of of because i have been given much wonderful. Would it be ok if we could ask a copy of your piano sheet? We are from philippes.
